Keeping pets safe during a fire

A home fire can be devastating, and losing a loved pet during one can only exacerbate the matter.

There are a number of things that people can do to keep themselves and their pets safe in the event of a home fire. The most important of which is having a monitored smoke detector that is connected to a monitoring system, the Ridgewood News reported. This provides "an added layer of protection beyond battery-operated smoke alarms."

There are also some preventative measures that people can do in order to protect their pets. A pet should never be left alone near an open flame, the Ridgewood News said. Homes should also be pet-proofed so that fires aren't accidentally started by someone's cat or dog.

When away from home, pet owners should also make sure their animals don't have access to things that are potential fire-starting hazards, according to the Ridgewood News. An escape route should also be in place and practiced with a pet in the event that a fire does occur.

When purchasing home alarm systems, consumers should check with the product developers about whether a fire protection system is included.ADNFCR-3514-ID-19910103-ADNFCR
