Those renting a place are actually 85 percent more likely to experience a home invasion than those who own one, SimpliSafe said citing National Crime Prevention Council data. There are certain signs that those living in an apartment should be aware attract burglars.
The first is if a mailbox name tag only has one resident listed, SimpliSafe said. This lets burglars know who's home alone at night. Mail piling up also lets invaders know when a person is out of town.
Not having a peephole on the front door gives criminals an extra license to misrepresent themselves when people ask who's at their door. Dark windows are also a calling sign for someone who isn't home, SimpliSafe said. Apartments that have windows with fire escapes also attract burglars. They are usually unlocked and offer an easy escape route.
If a person's apartment doesn't have a home security system, they should ask the property manager about installing one. If this isn't something they're willing to pay for, tenants may want to consider taking on the expense themselves.
