08/03/2010 07:00am -- When it comes to making sure a burglar doesn't break into a person's home, some of those who may feel the most vulnerable are senior citizens. However, there are some things they can do to protect themselves and their property.

Senior citizens may be a particular target for criminals looking to steal prescription medications, the Area Agency on Aging District 7 said. To prevent this, they should lock all medicine away and keep them out of sight. It may also be wise to ask their doctor if their prescriptions have any "street value."

They should also never leave spare house keys hidden under doormats or in planters and mailboxes, AAA7 advised. Those delivering items to senior citizen's homes should always be asked to provide proper identification.

For added protection against burglars, senior citizens may want to consider installing home security systems. There are a wide variety and can be easily researched online. They may also want to have an expert visit their home and advise them on which type of service would be most beneficial to them.ADNFCR-3514-ID-19917085-ADNFCR
