While nothing is 100 percent effective, some safety tips help reduce the risk of a home invasion, the Calderon Enterprise reported. It's often the simple things that people forget to do, such as lock a door, that allows a criminal to enter onto someone's property. Taking a few minutes of every day can be all that is necessary to ensure a safe home.
Safety official Rose DiMarco told the Enterprise "the best protection is prevention. It is important ... to get into the habit of locking your doors, windows and garages before you leave the house for the day." DiMarco advised making these safety tips part of a person's morning routine.
When going away on vacation, it's also important for residents to make their home like someone is there, the Enterprise said. This can be done leaving a garden hose or lawn chair on porch to make it look like a person is at home. Neighbors can also check on a residence while the inhabitants are away.
A good investment may be a home security monitoring system. This can alert officials to danger in one's home.
