08/24/2010 07:00am -- Police in Lexington, Kentucky, say they have seen more than 80 recent cases of local burglaries in which the thieves entered a home through a garage door which is partially or fully open.

Officers say that the items taken are often small and within easy reach, such as tools, sporting equipment or alcohol. In addition, the cases are often tough to prosecute because the thieves leave very little trace.

"Whether you're going to the store for a few minutes, whether you're going to a neighbor's house, keep those garage doors closed," Officer Bige Towery told the Lexington Herald-Leader.

Police added that they have made it a point to try and notify residents if they see an open garage door while on patrol.

The city's police department has also released a brochure for area residents to give them tips on how to avoid the problem, including changing the key code on their garage door opener after purchasing it, keeping the door closed and keeping small items in a locked area.ADNFCR-3514-ID-19929744-ADNFCR
