Property crime in the city has shot up 72 percent in the first half of this year and has reached its highest rate in five years.
Burglaries and thefts, many of which might have been prevented with a home security system, made up much of the increase, the Chronicle reports. While there were 270 thefts and 55 burglaries in the first six months of last year, there have been 475 thefts and 118 burglaries.
The city's police chief told the paper that the statistics were "not very comforting" and that residents should take care to lock their property and not leave valuables in cars where they can be easily spotted.
While property crime in the city spiked, violent crime has remained comparatively stable this year, but has also shown a 13 percent increase.
As a whole, the state has a long history of high property crime rates, although it has improved slightly recently. In 2005, the state had the highest rate of property crime in the country. By 2008, it had dropped to 37th.
