Having added security, the paper writes, like motion-activated lights or a home alarm system, can help make a home feel more secure, and give friends and family assurances that older relatives are doing well without feeling like they have to check in too frequently.
An alarm system can also help put retirees at ease while traveling, because they know that nothing has gone wrong at their home while they are away. Even if something does happen, they know that the alarm system will let them know right away so they won't worry.
While retirees have always been associated with high amounts of travel, a new survey by Mainstay Investments finds that travel is becoming increasingly important among baby boomers. Fifty percent said that taking at least one family vacation a year was a basic need during retirement and not a luxury.
