Officials emphasized the need for simple steps, like having - and using - locks on doors and windows and not storing expensive items in places that can be seen from the outside. A home alarm system can also be a deterrent.
"If they know you have a system, they'll go next door," Roger Houser, an employee at ETS Communications, told the station. "Why try yours if they know someone next door doesn't have one?"
Security companies have also begun putting GPS tracking devices on expensive items such as big-screen TVs or computers, so they can easily be found if they are ever stolen.
The city has seen its share of home invasions recently. Last month, two armed suspects broke into the home of an 82-year-old woman, tied her up and stole money from her home. Police were also working to determine if it was related to similar crimes in the area.
