According to MyCentralJersey.com, the proposed bill would require banks, check-cashing businesses, convenience stores, gun shops and other places of business to install cameras on their property.
"We're looking at ensuring the security of not only the stores, but the employees and customers," Ron Schmalz, the township's public affairs coordinator, told the site.
The bill would apply only to new construction or businesses which have not received a certificate of occupancy, and not those already in operation.
The site reports that the bill is currently being redrafted to give a more specific definition of the types of businesses affected, because some lawmakers were concerned about the bill's impact on small businesses.
Officials are considering the bill even though South Brunswick has traditionally seen very little criminal activity. In 2008, the township was listed as one of the Best Places to Live by CNN Money, in part because of very low property crime rates.
