The survey, conducted by M&S Insurance, found that 69 percent of respondents said that they would spend at least one night away from home this month. More than half would be leaving the home completely empty, and roughly a quarter didn't have anyone scheduled to look in on their property.
"We would urge homeowners to take appropriate steps to ensure their home is secure while they enjoy their holidays," said Andrew Ferguson, M&S Head of General Insurance.
Many survey respondents also left additional opportunities for burglars. Seventeen percent of those surveyed said that they left keys to their house or home alarm system hidden outside their home for friends, family or neighbors to come around.
Even more people will be heading away over the Labor Day holiday next month. AAA says that an estimated 31.4 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles away from home over the long weekend - a 10-percent increase over last year.
