Deputies say that cameras have helped them track down suspects in a number of recent crimes, including one where a neighbor was caught stealing copper off from the gutters of a nearby home.
"In the last two months alone we've cleared 28 burglaries with 17 arrests, some of which coming from images captured from video surveillance," Col. John Doran told the station. "You'd be surprised who's lurking around at 3 in the morning so this gives us another set of eyes. The camera doesn't lie."
Those numbers may soon grow. According to the station, police added that they are also working on about a dozen other cases where residents captured the crime on tape.
Police in New Orleans have been hard-pressed to keep up in recent years, following Hurricane Katrina. MSNBC says that the crime rate in the city is currently double the national average.
