08/30/2010 03:00pm -- Police in New Britain, Connecticut, are warning residents to stay alert after a number of area houses have been hit in a string of recent burglaries, the New Britain Herald reports.

Most of the crimes have taken place overnight, and criminals are entering the home while residents have been sleeping. Most instances have involved the burglar either cutting through a window screen or through an open window with an air conditioner inside it.

In some cases, the burglars have even stolen the victims' cars after robbing the home during the night.

Officials are warning residents whose windows are not protected by motion sensors or a home security system to be very careful with leaving windows open overnight, even if they are only open because of window air conditioning units.

The local police force hopes that a recent influx of funding will help it crack down on the recent rise in crime. The Bristol Press reports that earlier this month, the New Britain police department was awarded a nearly $60,000 grant through the Department of Justice.ADNFCR-3514-ID-19932845-ADNFCR
