Police told the paper that they've seen roughly an 80 percent increase in the number of the alarms they have received. While many of those alerts are false alarms, it shows that residents are taking steps to be more secure.
One family said that while their home has never been burglarized, they have heard of crime in the area, and the added security helps put them at ease.
"The neighborhood has changed," resident Lloyd Lindbo told the paper. "We probably sleep better just because we know something is going to go off if somebody does try to break in."
Part of the reason for the rise in security awareness among residents may be due to a rise in violent crime, the Insurance Journal reported. Statewide, the number of violent crimes increased 8 percent last year, and the number of murders increased by 375 percent.
