Officials in the Chicago suburb have issued a community alert, reminding homeowners to lock their windows and doors, and to consider installing home security systems or motion-activating lighting to deter thieves, the Southtown Star reports.
In most cases, the burglars have entered the homes in the early morning hours by either cutting or simply lifting the window screens on various homes while residents are sleeping, according to the paper. They have stolen various consumer goods, wallets and purses, and in some cases have even taken homeowners' car keys and then driven away from the scene.
Police are also asking residents to alert their neighbors about the situation and watch for any suspicious activity.
The crimes are similar in nature to many other burglaries across the country. According to the New Britain Herald, a number of homes in Connecticut have been robbed by burglars who have entered the home through windows which were left open for air conditioners.
