Research from the University of California-Davis has shown that cat fur can be used as evidence in identifying a burglar, according to PetPeoplePlace.com. Using this furry feline to catch criminals came from one researcher' love of television crime dramas.
UC Davis' Dr. Leslie Lyons told PetPeoplePlace.com that "because cats incessantly groom, cat fur may have nucleated cells, not only in the hair bulb, but also as epithelial cells on the hair shaft deposited during the grooming process, thereby generally providing material for DNA profiling." In other words: Criminals beware of homes with cats because this is one robbery detail they cannot control.
There has already been once instance where a cat's fur helped convict a criminal. Pet owners are encouraged to keep their cat's DNA on file, in the event their home is broken into, PetPeoplePlace.com said.
While this is a major breakthrough, consumers may want to consider investing in burglar alarms as a preventative measure.
