With close to 2,400 non-campus burglaries reported by U.S. colleges during 2008, it's important that students take their safety seriously. One of the most important tips is for people to always be aware of their surroundings, All Home Security advised. Walking in well-lit areas will help with this. If an apartment complex lacks sufficient lighting, the property manager should be notified.
Students should always tell a friend or roommate of their plans in the event that something goes awry, All Home Security said. Valuables also shouldn't be in plain sight to those outside of the apartment. Curtains and blinds should be used to block people from seeing inside a living space, and electronics such as laptops and MP3 players should be kept in a locked bedroom when not at home.
If a home security system isn't installed in the apartment, students should encourage their property managers to purchase one, All Home Security said.
Other off-campus safety tips include traveling in groups when possible and not to listening to music while running outdoors.
