Humane Society calling for security cameras

01/26/2012 07:00am -- It's no secret that security cameras are excellent crime deterrents, but one organization in Kentucky would like to harness cameras' deterrent power for a different cause.

The Franklin County Humane Society has noticed a trend of more animals being dropped off to the facility during overnight hours, which has caused the organization to call for security cameras to be installed to discourage pet owners from leaving their animals, according to local CBS affiliate WKYT.

The facility has signs posted in several spots on the property that read, "No dumping," but pet owners ignore the signs and leave their animals anyway. According to WKYT, dogs are dumped at the facility all the time. One such abandoned animal is a black dog now referred to as Diamond.

"It was about 7:25 and she pulled up to find a dog tied to the gate outside," Angie Stewart, manager of the Humane Society, said. "Of course, it was raining all night last night. We're not sure how long the dog had been out there."

Staff at the Humane Society are now trying to raise funds to have security cameras installed outside the building to deter pet owners from leaving their animals overnight, despite the owners being able to drop them off for free during business hours,  the source stated.
