By interviewing ex-burglars, insurance company MORE TH>N was able to compile the types of things people most often do that unintentionally invite an invader into their home. One-third of these criminals will target residences that are detached houses or bungalows because they are easiest to steal from. Leaving packaging from pricey purchases out with the trash also acts as signal.
If people think their neighbors will act as a deterrent, they should think again. These criminals told MORE TH>N that neighbors are more likely to "to pretend not to notice rather than 'make a fuss' and call the police."
Former burglar Richard Taylor said that "homeowners should sit up and take note of these results, the importance of home security cannot be overlooked, yet surprisingly many homeowners fail to take even the simplest precautions to protect themselves."
Consumers may want to consider investing a home security system. Not only will it deter burglars, but it will likely lower homeowners or renters insurance costs.
