Clever ways to protect possessions not always the most effective

07/22/2010 01:49pm -- When protecting a person's residence and possessions from a possible home invasion, there are number of options available. Some people are taking a unique approach to hide their belongings from burglars.

Some people have resorted to using decoy doors, burying their valuables in the garden and even sewing jewelery into the curtains, financial website Every Investor said. However, these clever attempts at fooling burglars often backfire.

Hiscox senior risk and valuation adviser Andrew Cheney told the financial website that "homeowners can be quite creative in their attempts at securing their valuables. However, many of their inventive hiding places are quite obvious to most thieves, and there's also the danger of forgetting them."

Instead of hiding valuables, Cheney advises consumers to try and keep burglars from being able to get into the home to begin with. Trees and shrubbery, along with fences and walls are the first line of defense for a home, Hiscox reported. Doors should have deadlocks; valuables need to be locked in a safe; and timer-operated lights make others think a person is home when they are out.

Consumers may also want to consider investing in a home security system to ward off potential home invasions.ADNFCR-3514-ID-19899788-ADNFCR
