An empty box that once contained a high-definition television in front of the house may be the thing that entices a burglar to decide to break into a residence. The Chattanooga Times Free Press has provided some suggestions for homeowners to think about in terms ensuring their home security during the holidays.
The paper says that burglars may mark down addresses where there was an empty box outside, then come back when the home is vacant. There are ways to destroy any evidence of boxes before a thief can suspect anything. Taking the box to be disposed of at a recycling center, or breaking it into multiple pieces and putting it into different trash bags are two ways to prevent potential perpetrators from knowing what may be inside.
As for keeping the home secure, locking all windows and doors eliminates easy access for burglars. Also, burglar alarms are considered to be one of the more efficient types of home security systems, as long as homeowners remember to use it.
A five-year study that was completed last year indicated that installing burglar alarms in homes will decrease crime, according to the Rutgers University School of Criminal Justice.
