Many U.S cities see an increase of break-ins during this time of year, and Gary, Indiana, is no exception. The Post Tribune recently reported that there were 210 burglaries in November, averaging out to seven per day.
Detective Keith Richardson told the paper that the combination of decreased day light hours and an increase in holiday shopping makes this time of year ideal for burglars. Police chief Gary Carter said last week, "It's bad here, but it's bad everywhere," he commented, noting that at a recent meeting he listened to other law enforcement officials cite increases in residential break-ins.
In response, the authorities created a burglary task force in the city, which consists of officers monitoring the streets in unmarked vehicles while looking for burglars.
Carter noted that having a trusted neighbor watch the house while the homeowner is gone is a great way to decrease the risk of becoming a victim of a burglary. In addition, authorities encouraged residents to use timers for inside and outside lights and added that keeping valuables out of the windows may help keep perpetrators at bay.
Home security systems are one of the more efficient ways to keep burglars out. Based on statistics, a criminal is less likely to break into a home that has home alarm monitoring, says a post on ArticlesBase by Home Security Systems 123.
