California town installs cameras to increase home security

To increase security and thwart the attempts of local criminals, officials in Vallejo, California, recently installed security cameras that the police department hopes will act as an additional set of eyes.

The city's police force is currently low on funds. Thus, hiring additional police officers was not an option. As the area's crime rate began to increase, the department had to devise new methods to keep up an acceptable level of security.

"If the cameras are there it's going to deter crime just by the presence of the cameras," Vallejo police sergeant Jeff Bassett told KGO-TV, an ABC affiliate in San Francisco.

During the last several years, the number of instances involving muggings, shootings and prostitution has risen. The increase could be directly related to the city's bankruptcy that took place two years ago.

The cameras use telephoto lenses that have night vision accessibility, which can track activity at all points of the day. Furthermore, the cameras have plenty of storage space, meaning they can be functional for long periods of time.

In the past, some citizens have expressed privacy concerns, however, the ABC report relays that no issues have been mentioned in relation to the new cameras thus far.
