Cameras reduce crime at Baltimore shopping centers

Many shopping centers in the Baltimore area have installed security cameras in recent years - and have seen a significant drop in crime.

The Baltimore Sun reports that shopping centers with cameras have seen violent crime drop by almost a third since 2006 - roughly twice the national rate of decline.

The city's police chief, Jim Johnson, told the paper that the security cameras had "contributed to the significant decreases in crime over the past three years" and were "a very valuable asset in obtaining evidence that has been used by our officers and detectives in solving crimes, and arresting those committing them."

The study of crime statistics examined crime rates at 42 shopping centers in the city. Since 2006, when the cameras were installed, assaults and robberies dropped 37 percent, murders dropped from three to one and there were no rapes.

Baltimore has earned a reputation as a violent city. Earlier this month the Sun reported that although the city saw its fewest number of murders in 20 years last year, it still has one of the highest murder rates in the country.ADNFCR-3514-ID-19926738-ADNFCR
