Cargo theft becoming an issue in Tennessee

Recent data released by the National Insurance Crime Bureau might make some Tennessee car companies consider GPS tracking soon.

The agency's latest report revealed that Tennessee had the fifth-worst crime rate involved cargo thefts during 2010, when 40 incidents were reported. A cargo theft is regarded as any that involves goods being unlawfully taken while in transit between a shipper and destination.

California ranked a top the agency's list with 247 reported incidents throughout the year, followed by Texas with 91 and Florida with 66. Nationwide, 747 cargo thefts occurred, costing as much as $171 million.

The most common type of goods stolen during these thefts was electronics, which was followed by "other" goods and then food.

With GPS tracking systems in place, companies might have the ability to follow any stolen items and improve their bottom lines.

Other advice issued by security experts was for companies to screen all employees for potential red flags in their background and to train employees for the proper protocol in the event of a theft during transit.
