Cars stolen, broken into in New Jersey neighborhood

Two cars were stolen and three burglarized in Ridgewood, New Jersey, according to the Ridgewood News, and the events have alarmed local residents.

Ridgewood police officers told the paper the suspects stole the two vehicles, as well as possessions from a few other cars, during a few-hour span in one night in what many consider to be one of the state's most affluent communities.

"Our concern is the suspects may be attempting to gain key code information out of the owner's manuals, and/or use the registration," Ridgewood police chief John Ward told the paper. "When you see that many [break-ins and thefts,] there is a concern that people are going into these cars to gain information for key code duplication, and we're concerned they may try to come back."

He added that homeowners should be more vigilant regarding criminal activity outside their homes to prevent thefts such as these.

GPS tracking devices may be the best method of car theft prevention for New Jersey residents, as several incidents such as the one in Ridgewood have taken place throughout the state.

Reports say a car thief was caught in Bethlehem Township, New Jersey, after stealing a vehicle and evading police by driving at speeds upwards of 120 miles per hour.
