The Woonsocket, Rhode Island police department hopes its new security camera protocol will help officers track down suspects before their trail goes cold.
WJAR-TV reports that police are working to compile a database with the location of all of the security cameras in the city - whether its from a home, business or other location. When a crime is committed in the area, they will be able to see what security cameras may have gotten a glimpse of the suspects, and ask the owners if they can see the video.
Officers told the station that the quick access will help them get a better start in their investigations.
"We know how valuable video surveillance is, we see it every day. There are numerous crimes where we've identified criminals with the video surveillance source," detective Eugene Jalette of the Woonsocket Police Department told the station.
The program also may help to curb the increasing trend of robberies in the state. According to the Rhode Island State Police, while there were less than 800 robberies last year, the state is already on pace to surpass that number by more than 10 percent in 2010.
