A recent home invasion in College Park, Maryland, resulted in the intruder being shot by the resident who confronted the suspect.
A teenager, whose name is being withheld because he's a juvenile, broke into the College Park home around 12:30 p.m. on December 30, but was met by the homeowner, who heard glass breaking. The homeowner armed himself with a gun and shot the intruder when he attempted to access the residence's second floor.
According to the Virginian-Pilot, the neighborhood has been plagued in recent months with home invasions. Residents are becoming more cautious of their surroundings and home security following the recent increase in violence.
"Even right now, I'm still afraid," neighbor Louise Sibly said to the Pilot. "When I come in, I look through the whole house. I even pull back the shower curtains."
The source reported that the homeowner who shot the intruder, will not face any criminal charges since he acted in self-defense.
Maryland reported more than 36,000 burglaries in 2010, according to FBI statistics.
