Crime cameras proving cost-effective home security method

According to a study recently conducted by the Urban Institute's Justice Policy Center in Baltimore, security cameras have proven to be a cost-effective method for fighting local neighborhood crime.

The report discovered that the region's network of more than 500 cameras has led to a decline in crime in most areas and has provided taxpayers with a return of nearly $1.50 for every dollar spent on the system.

A similar study was conducted in Chicago and Washington, D.C. While the data in Chicago resembled the results in Baltimore, the crime rate was not significantly affected in the nation's capital.

"Overall, the most effective surveillance systems are those that are monitored by trained staff and have enough cameras to detect crimes in progress and investigate them after the fact," said Nancy La Vigne, the study's lead researcher.

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake assured reporters that despite the camera network's effectiveness, the new technology is not a replacement for officers, regardless of recent budgetary cuts.
