Crime increasing in the Rockaways

Crime has increased drastically in the area known as the Rockaways, the peninsula of Long Island in New York City.

Local news sources reported burglaries jumped 144 percent in 2011, from 54 to 132, felony assaults increased 66 percent from 78 to 130, while robberies went up 31 percent from 63 to 83.

The alarming increase in violence in the area has begun to worry residents who are fearing for their safety.

“I get so paranoid. Who wants to look over their shoulder right near their home?” said 45-year-old resident Jessica Roper told the New York Post. “I hope it doesn’t get too out of control.”

While crime is increasing in the Rockaways, Manhattan's 20th precint reported a significant drop in crime of 12.8 percent this year.

The total number of felony crimes in the New York City area increased by 0.2 percent from 2010, with murder rates dropping more than 5 percent and homicides down to 490 from last year's 519, the Post reported.

New York City reported close to 18,000 burglaries in 2010, according to FBI statistics. Law officials are doing their best to combat these numbers.
