Detroit authorities arrest serial car thieves

Eight people were apprehended by Detroit police, according to reports, who are accused of stealing at least 21 cars over the last year.

"The investigation took us close to a year," Detroit police commander Robert Ennis told The Detroit News. "It originally started with pushes in the downtown area … with high-end vehicles stolen for their tires and wheels. It escalated to armed carjackings, because they realized the casinos and some of the bars had valet services, and that to be able to make the really good money, you have to have the keys to the vehicles."

Detroit police chief Ralph Godbee told WDIV-TV that city police officers worked with the FBI, Michigan State Police and other agencies to catch the criminals.

Fox News in Detroit says the total value of the cars stolen by the thieves was near half a million dollars, and that one of the vehicles stolen belonged to Reverend Jesse Jackson.

While authorities detained these car thieves, Detroit drivers would be wise to invest in GPS tracking systems for their vehicles, such as ones offered by Protect America, to help track them down if stolen.
