The police department of Durham, North Carolina, recently released tips for residents to consider when preparing for safety during the holiday season.
The holidays are usually a time burglars look to invade homes, being aware that families often are out of town visiting relatives and valuables are found in residences during this time of giving.
The police department urged residents to utilize a good dead bolt lock that deters burglars from entering the home, and be diligent about locking it. The authorities also discouraged residents from keeping Christmas gifts where they can be seen from outside. Breaking down boxes that presents came in and discretely disposing of them will keep burglars from knowing exactly what might be in the home, police stated.
For residents of Durham who are staying home for the holidays, police said that if they hear someone breaking into the home, they should leave the residence as quickly as possible or call the police.
Using a timer to turn lights on and off when leaving a home is also a security tip that is thought to be imperative to fend off intruders. Leaving on a television or radio is also a method to deterring burglars from breaking into homes.
Police released these tips after a number of home invasions in the area, which have resulted in casualties, including one in October resulting in a death, according to the Durham County News Observer.
