Facebook is being used as more than just a social network, as it is being used by a recent victim of a burglary to catch two criminals who had stolen her laptop.
According to the Chicago Tribune, when Theresa Unkrur's home was broken into recently, her daughter's MacBook was stolen, in addition to another MacBook, an iPhone, PlayStation 3, video games and a controller.
Police told Unkrur they got good fingerprints from a television mounted on the wall that the thieves tried to take. Another clue popped up on Facebook, when a photo of the thieves was taken by the computer they stole, the Tribune reported.
Unkrur's daughter's computer had an app installed that automatically posts photos to Facebook, and the image of two men who may be the thieves popped up on her page when they attempted to snap a photo of themselves, the source stated.
Unkrur said her daughter quickly noticed she hadn't posted the photo and that it came from the app on her stolen computer. Family members are now posting the picture on their Facebook pages asking for assistance in capturing the thieves.
While they expressed surprise at the role Facebook is playing in this investigation, crime experts contacted by the Tribune pointed to how technology, including home surveillance cameras and home security systems, can potentially help in solving crimes.
Facebook has more than 800 million active users and the average user has 130 friends.
