Fire department pushing for wireless alarm upgrades

The Chicago suburb of Elk Grove Village might be installing upgrades to the current fire alarm systems in an effort to replace hard phone line systems with wireless alarms.

According to local news source Journal & Topics, Elk Grove Village trustees recently discussed changing the alarm system and are expected to draft an ordinance that would require any new building built after April to use a new wireless alarm system in place of the old system.

Excluding single-family homes, most buildings in Elk Grove are required to have an automated fire alarm system hard-wired through a phone line that alerts the fire department almost instantly when there's a fire, the source reported.

A new wireless alarm configuration that uses a mesh system would able to convey more information when alerting the fire department, would be more reliable in case of blackouts and more affordable for users, the source stated. By converting to the new system, the village will save $9,000 a year, according to Village Manager Ray Rummel.

According to Tennessee news source the Murfreesboro Post, alarm systems provide residents and business owners with peace of mind and protection that will elevate awareness of living spaces. Contributing to a column in the paper, a home security expert pointed out that many alarm systems perform multiple tasks, monitoring for fire and carbon monoxide as well as intruders.
