Vandals recently torched an Orthodox synagogue in Rutherford, New Jersey, which now has Rabbi Nosson Schuman installing surveillance cameras and alarm systems to prevent another attack from occurring.
Congregation Beth El was set on fire after suspects threw firebombs at Schuman's home on the second floor of the synagogue at around 4:30 a.m. on January 11. The attack was just one in a string of violent anti-Semitic attacks on synagogues in Bergen County. Another wave of attacks has occurred nearby, in the New York boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn, as well as on Long Island.
“Every place they attacked was some place that didn’t have a surveillance system,” Rabbi Schuman pointed out to news source The Jewish Week. “I assume if you have one - unless they start becoming braver and taking more risks - they are going to stay away.”
Schuman told the Week that the neighborhood has raised more than $2,000 towards purchasing and installing security cameras and extra lighting with motion sensors around the place of worship.
According to the Jewish Daily Forward, the attacks began on December 10, when a synagogue was spray-painted with swastikas and the words "Jews did 9/11." Authorities are investigating one suspect who was arrested for making threatening calls to Jewish residents in the area.
