The Flint Township Police Department is planning to hand out free home video security cameras next Tuesday to the first 50 residents in line from certain neighborhoods, according to WJRT-TV.
The cameras are worth $150, and they are made up of two wireless video cameras and a remote transmitter, says the station. After the selected citizens get their security cameras, they simply have to screw the devices into place and plug them in. The transmitter will allow people to hook them up to a television or computer.
Local authorities note that installing security cameras will provide a safer environment for residents. Lieutenant Tim Jones told the station, "It's peace of mind," he commented. "Sometimes people are nervous about answering the door in the middle of the night. This allows them to not have to open the door."
A federal grant along with contributions from the Target Corporation and other organizations made the give-away possible, according to the station. Some of the eligible Flint Township subdivision areas, include Dayton Heights, Riverview, Ridgecliff and Utley Hills.
In addition to preventing crime, security cameras may help provide evidence one might need to prosecute or locate a perpetrator if a crime does happen, according to HomeSecuritySystemSales.com.
