GPS tracking helps lock up New York car thief

After threatening fellow employees and customers, a medical transport company worker in New York reportedly stole one of the business' vans. Little did the robber know, however, the vehicle was armed with a GPS tracking device.

The New York District Court charged Kevin Cheeks with theft after he stole a van from his employer, Sigma Transportation, in December 2009. According to reports, Cheeks pretended to have a gun to force his co-workers and customers to the back of the company's store, stole $300 from the cash register and took off in the van.

Despite what he may have thought was an easy getaway, authorities tracked the suspect to a nearby salon with the aid of a GPS tracking device the company installed in the car. Also, the New York Post states the company's security cameras caught footage of Cheeks stealing the van.

"The defendant will have a long time behind bars to ponder how a simple GPS vehicle-tracking device and a few mouse clicks led to his arrest and conviction," district attorney Richard Brown told the newspaper.

Many companies in the U.S. have begun using GPS tracking to monitor company vehicles, as well as their employees. According to KCRG-TV in Iowa, a Wellman city worker was fired when city officials discovered through monitoring the employee's GPS-enabled vehicle that he wasn't working.
