While GPS systems are typically used for drivers to navigate unknown territories, they have also proven effective for locating people and stolen items.
According to a recent report in the Princeton Packet, a GPS tracking system helped located an 84-year-old woman, who had been missing for several hours. The woman reportedly left her house on Friday, June 3, and her family could not locate her. However, the woman had been recently enrolled in the region's Project Lifesaver program, which uses advanced tracking technology to help locate individuals.
"We followed immediate leads and information very quickly and when those didn't pan out, we contacted the sheriff’s office," Nicholas Sutter, captain of the borough police, told the news source. "We were aware the victim had been recently enrolled in the Project Lifesaver program and from there we worked hand-in-hand with the sheriff's department and Princeton Township Police as we tracked the signal from her GPS device."
Thanks for the tracking system, the woman was found two miles from her home in a wooded area. Despite being confused, the woman had no injuries.
The Lifesaver program is free for local residents to enroll in.
