Holiday safety on the minds of Americans

The holidays are quickly approaching, causing some individuals to be more cautious about their belongings and home security.

Thefts and home invasions occur at an increasing rate around holiday time, and security companies are trying to boost awareness of holiday hazards. Master Lock recently offered safety tips for consumers who want to protect their valuables during the holiday season.

"The holidays are a fun but busy time, and the flurry of activity can often cause important considerations, such as safety and security, to go overlooked," said Rebecca Smith, vice president of marketing for Master Lock.

When traveling during the holiday season, Master Lock encourages Americans to make sure car safety is taken into account by ensuring the tire pressure is what it should be and stocking a safety kit in the vehicle.

In addition to car safety, Master Lock encourages Americans to make sure their homes are secure when they leave for the holiday season. While many safety-conscious homeowners might already have a home security system installed, Master Lock urges everyone to inform trusted neighbors how long they'll be traveling and to ask them to watch the house.

Burglary numbers usually are the highest in the summer months, but increase around November and December when home intruders know homes are left unattended by the owners, according to the CrimeInAmerica website.
