Home alarm system owners in St. Louis advised to check permit status

Police are asking St. Louis residents who have home security systems installed to check the status of their alarm permit, after an issue with one caused officials to take 30 minutes to respond to a local burglary.

KMOV-TV reports that the home security system inside a local home went off when burglars broke in through the side window, but police didn't immediately respond because the permit number for the alarm was invalid. The burglars eventually made off with a large flat-screen television, some personal items, and a gun safe that was hidden in a closet. By the time police finally arrived, they were long gone.

A city regulation, passed in 2005, requires owners to register their alarms if they want police to respond. Otherwise, according to the station, they need to call police and "prove" it's not a false alarm. The homeowners thought that the alarm company had taken care of that when the system was installed, but it hadn't.

Other areas have also initiated alarm registration policies to cut down on false alarms, reports KBTX-TV. Officials in Bryan and College Station, Texas have both created new policies, some of which fine residents for not registering their home alarm systems.
