A recent article in the Southwest Review News explained that the best home security method may be to see a house through the eyes of criminal.
The article references a recent robbery, where the homeowner entered his garage one morning and found it turned upside down. While his GPS unit, change from the cars and a circular saw from the garage were stolen, he had fortunately remembered to lock the service door between the house and garage, or else more items would have been taken.
The homeowner realized that opportunistic burglars can be quite cool-headed when dealing with break-ins and robberies.
"They spent a reasonable amount of time in [the garage] looking through things," the homeowner told the news source. "It makes you uneasy."
To deal with these problems, the article recommends homeowners survey their property each night and detect any potential points of weakness. In the aforementioned cases, the home and garage had been locked, but his car in the driveway - containing a garage door opener - was not. By surveying these areas, homeowners can effectively boost their security without making any drastic technology upgrades.
