A recent burglary of a Hicksville, New York, home was caught on the family's exterior home security camera.
The incident involved a man who was driving down the street when he spotted a package on the front steps of a house belonging to John Blazich and his wife. According to Newsday, the man quickly slammed on his brakes and made a U-turn to go back and steal the package, which contained sweaters and clothes for the couple's daughter and other children.
"It was actually kind of comical to watch it," Blazich said to Newsday. "Fortunately nobody was hurt. It wasn't a particularly valuable package. It was just frustrating and annoying."
According to Newsday, the thief is still on the run, and police have noticed an increase in the number of doorstep thefts this holiday season. Many delivery companies in previous years required a resident of the home to sign for deliveries, but in recent years, they have become accustomed to leaving packages in an inconspicuous place near the door.
While the loss suffered by Blazich family might not have been financially devastating, U.S. victims of burglary suffered a total loss of $4.6 billion in 2009, with the average dollar loss per burglary at $2,096, according to the FBI.
