Home security cameras creating peace of mind

Residents in the Flint Township area are already feeling a sense of security after the local police department gave out free security cameras to the first 50 people who showed up to a giveaway last week, according to WJRT-TV.

After becoming victims of a home break-in earlier in the year, one local elderly couple has regained their home security confidence since receiving the surveillance equipment. Larry Lemieux told the station, "We are elderly and we feel we were taken advantage of once before because of our age," noting that his wife's purse was stolen during the incident.

Now they, along with their neighbors, are hoping that the addition of the security cameras will create safer neighborhoods and add a certain level protection from perpetrators. The equipment given to the 50 residents consists of two cameras that run on a wireless system which can hold up to four cameras, according to the station.

Homeowners are at risk of losing more than just their sense of feeling safe, as FBI statistics indicated that property crimes resulted in estimated losses of $15.2 billion in 2009.
