Home security systems embracing high-tech development

Much like nearly every category of electronic devices, the Dallas Morning News reports that home security systems are undergoing a transformation as they adapt to new technologies and cultural changes.

The technology has allowed homeowners to take a more active role in monitoring their own homes. Instead of just watching for burglars, the paper reports residents can now watch live video feeds from security cameras mounted inside the home from their laptops and smartphones to check on their kids doing homework or the plumber making repairs.

"Security is transitioning from being a stand-alone product and service, if you will, to being part of a much broader universe of offerings – offerings which have become as much lifestyle as life safety," Jonathan Klinger, vice president of marketing for Honeywell, told the paper.

The industry has also adapted cellular phone technologies into the systems themselves, the paper reports. Traditional systems relied on traditional phone lines, which could be compromised by a burglar cutting a phone line. But newer systems are cellular, circumventing that issue.

In addition, a growing number of households don't pay for a traditional landline phone. According to the trade group CTIA, 24.5 percent of U.S. households were wireless only in June of this year.
