A member of the Cape Coral Police Department in Southwest Florida presented an almost free home security system outline after officer John Tsourkas explained that $5 can go a long way in keeping burglars out, according to WBBH-TV.
Tsourkas noted that the first place of access a Southwest Florida burglar looks for is the sliding glass doors. “What they’re going to do is grab a hold of the slider and lift it off its tracks and pull it out,” said Tsourkas, noting a brief visit to the hardware store can solve that specific problem.
According to the report, the officer stated that a dowel rod, priced at roughly $0.49, is the cheapest and easiest solution to this problem due to the fact that the rod will eliminate the extra space on top of the slider and take the leverage out of the door, so, as he says, “There is no way anyone can lift up the door anymore.”
As for windows, the report cited the officer stating that window lock clips costing $2.99 can be used to prevent a burglar from crawling through them.
Despite a number of recent incidents, burglaries were down from last year. According to the FBI, the total number of burglaries in the state was 181,884 in 2009, a figure that is down 3.5 percent from 2008.
