Burglaries can happen anywhere at any time, but a thief looking to score big may tend to prefer a residential home. The Palm Beach Police Department has released a report of tips people can use that will help keep intruders away from residential properties.
If a suspicious person is lurking in any neighborhood, the department strongly recommends that people within the area should call the police as soon as possible. Residential neighborhoods can work together by looking out for fishy activity on each other's properties. All homeowners need to make sure that all doors and windows are sufficiently secured, as the department notes at least one-half of all residential burglaries enter through doors or windows that are unlocked.
Another tip is to try to keep indoor and outdoor lights on timers if possible, because as the department suggests, burglars "hate" bright lights. This method is especially useful for people who are going to be away from home for an extended period of time. Residents should also take care to hide all the valuables in case a perpetrator does manage to get in.
If there are home alarm systems in the home, the department recommends using them all the time. The Memphis Police Department also recommended that homeowners should consider installing home security systems to protect their property.
