Lights and locks a low-cost deterrent

With burglaries and property crimes rising in many cities across the country, home security experts tell Cleveland's WKYC-TV that beefing up residents' home security systems can be very simple.

According to the station, replacing locks or adding a deadbolt to doors can make it tougher for burglars to enter, and generally doesn't cost much. Even adding stronger screws to existing locks can make a difference.

"It's a bad situation. People feel like they've been violated and they never feel comfortable in their home after they've been broken into," Dennis Bregitzer, co-captain of the recently formed local block watch organization, told the station.

Security experts also told the station that simply shutting the blinds can make it so burglars don't see things that might be worth stealing, and adding lights in dark areas can prevent them from hanging around for a closer look.

While crime rates have remained fairly level in Cleveland over the past several years, many people don't feel safe in their own areas. A poll conducted by the Cleveland Plain-Dealer earlier this year found that nearly one-third of area residents didn't feel safe walking in their neighborhoods at night.
