Marquette Park Pavilion receives security upgrades

Marquette Park Pavilion in Gary, Indiana, recently underwent a security upgrade, following intruders breaking into the facility last month.

The 80-year-old pavilion has received upgrades in the form of motion sensors and a silent alarm system connected to the Gary Police Department, according to city officials and project managers who spoke with local news source the Post-Tribune.

Security officers have also been assigned to patrol the area during off-work hours and 24 hours a day on weekends, according to the Post-Tribune.

The building recently underwent renovations as part of the $28.4 million makeover of Marquette Park, which was funded by the Regional Development Authority, the source reported.

The thieves who broke into the pavilion in December stole copper and industrial tools from contractors' metal gang boxes, with an estimated value in the thousands of dollars, the source stated.

Indiana reported more than 47,000 burglaries in 2010, according to FBI statistics.
