Mississippi home invasions lead police to search for suspects

Police in the Mississippi towns of Picayune and Poplarville are looking for suspects in two separate home invasions that took place on November 20.

Authorities believe the two home invasions are possibly linked to the same suspects.

Two suspects allegedly broke into a home in Picayune around 5:30 a.m. Armed with handguns, they assaulted a 61-year-old female resident. That incident took place less than two hours after a home invasion occurred in Poplarville.

The first home invasion victims fled the house before the suspects could get to them. A mother and her son were in the residence when the mother heard a doorknob turning. She fled from the home with her son while he called the police. She said the intruders were carrying a gun and flashlight when she saw them.

The suspects allegedly left the home in Picayune with an unknown amount of money and several other items, taken from the victim's purse.

Local ABC affiliate WLOX quoted a police spokesperson who requested that anyone with a home security camera in the vicinity of the break-ins review their footage for clues about the events.

Mississippi reported more than 30,000 burglaries in 2010, according to FBI statistics.
