Residents in Columbia, Missouri, are on edge after several home burglary incidents occurred so far in December, according to the Columbia Daily Tribune.
The police department has been investigating the burglaries in the northeast Columbia area of the city, including an attempted break-in at a local high school. The paper noted that among the items that have been stolen are electronics, televisions and antique coins.
One resident reported a loud noise in her home, and as she checked to see what it was, she ran into the burglar who apparently entered the home through an unlocked door, says the paper. Another incident on the same day saw a resident come home to find his back door forced open. Additionally, between December 3 and December 12, there have been 15 vehicle thefts.
Police are urging residents to lock all their home and car doors and windows, says the paper. Extra officers are on patrol in the area during the holidays in hopes of decreasing the amount of burglaries.
Home security systems are rapidly advancing in technology and making it easier for families to keep intruders away. WMBF-TV reported that home security companies are providing new tools to protect homes, such as cell phone applications that can be used to monitor a household from anywhere.
