Home security systems could soon become much more sophisticated thanks to new research into nanomaterials from Arizona State University.
Researchers at ASU layered ultra-thin nanomaterials to create crystal-producing "super lattices," according to a letter published recently in the journal Applied Physics Letters. The crystals in these lattices are capable of acting as highly sensitive photodetectors, which can be easily manipulated to detect varying wavelengths of light and convert them into electric signals.
By manipulating the super lattices, researchers can change the sensitivity to pick up highly accurate infrared images. The applications for this technology are broad and varied, ranging from advanced weapons systems and medical diagnostic technology, to night-vision capabilities for law enforcement officers and effective home security systems for average consumers.
Approaches to infrared technology research are as varied as its potential uses. Researchers at General Electric have developed a new infrared heat sensor that is made by coating the wings of the Morpho butterfly with single-walled carbon nanotubes, according to a recent MedGadget.com article.
